School Supply Collection

EPUMC is once again collecting school supplies for the Schenectady City School District. The collection will run until September 17th. There is a bin in the hallway and Brenda Morrow will see that all items get to students in need. Suggested supplies: pencils, pens, colored pencils, markers, paper,wire-bound notebooks, folders, tissues. Thank you for your help!

Harvey Relief

Our United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is already mobilizing to help in Texas, as they help with disasters and emergencies all over the world. The quickest way we can offer help is through monetary donations. UMCOR has two special funds that can be utilized for Hurricane Harvey relief: “U.S. Disaster Response Advance #901670” or the “Materials Resources Advance #901440”.

There are two different emergency kits that are especially needed in these circumstances. The Hygiene Kit costs $12 and includes personal toiletry items like hand towels, comb, soap. The Cleaning Kit costs $65 and has a 5 gallon bucket with cleaning supplies in it. Our church has collected and assembled these kits in the past, but it is faster to send monetary contributions at this point. The value of the kits might be helpful to those of you who might like to make a contribution. If you choose to donate by check made out to EPUMC, please include the Advance # on the memo line of your check.

Homecoming

EPUMC celebrates its homecoming September 10. We have fun and exiting things planned for worship that day and ice cream after. Put it on your calendar! I'll see you there!

Worship Team

The initial meeting of our worship team will be Sunday, September 17, immediately following our refreshment time after our worship service. We will meet in the Hearth Room for no more than 45 minutes. Thank you to those who signed up for the worship team. I look forward to seeing you there. Please remember, though, this meeting is open to anyone in our community interested in a conversation about worship.

A Vision Forward

We will use the first Sunday of each month for a congregational forum to discuss current and future activities in the life of our church. For those interested in this conversation, we will gather in the sanctuary on October 1 following refreshment time for 30–40 minutes to discuss things that we are doing well and how to improve what we are doing, as well as to chart a path for new and future activities. This will coincide with our education program, which will take place the remaining three Sundays of each month. Mark will lead the initial gathering. Perhaps others with particular ideas will take the lead in other first Sunday discussions.

Invitations

We need a volunteer or volunteers to organize our Harvest Festival booth for October 7th. The booth will be located on Union Street. Please contact Mark or Richard if you are willing to do this.

We also need someone to lead our Safe Sanctuary program, a program required by the United Methodist Church. This position is make sure that we follow all the appropriate rules for classroom conduct with our children. The requirements are in place. This person is to make sure that we are following them. Please contact Mark or Richard if you are willing to take this leadership role in our church.

We are still accepting volunteers to lead Young People's Time during our worship service. The sign up sheet is located outside the Narthex.

New Testament Lecture

Dr. John Dominic Crossan, one of today's leading New Testament scholars will offer two lectures at First Schenectady United Methodist Church on September 23 at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. These lectures are open to the public and free of charge.

There will be others. This is a start.

The Gospel of Mark

We will begin our study gatherings called "Sunday Forum" on Sunday, October 8, immediately following our refreshment time. Study session will end at 12:15. Our topic is the Gospel of Mark and will include readings of short stories and poetry that reflect ideas and themes in Mark's gospel. You will be provided copies of these readings.

Children and Worship Class Starting Sunday

We’re excited to announce that a new Children and Worship class will begin on September 10th, Homecoming Sunday. This class is appropriate for children preschool (age 3) through 2nd grade and is our church school class for our youngest kids.

Children and Worship is a program that was developed to help young children worship God using an Montessori-based approach. As the website explains, it “invites children and adults to experience the wonder and mystery of God through a unique storytelling format and multisensory materials” [http://www.childrenandworship.org/home]. Teacher-storytellers tell the stories of God using simple wooden figures and other materials; then children have the opportunity to use the story materials to tell the stories themselves. Worship also includes singing, learning American Sign Language, snack, and time for art.

This year’s teacher-storytellers will be Martha Gardner and Barb Lewis (370-0570). If you’re interested in registering a child for our class, or if you’d like to volunteer to become a storyteller, please call!

Help Revive the Nursery

Sign Up to Play

There are some very new members of the EPUMC congregation! We are working to reorganize our Nursery space to recreate a safe and fun place for parents to leave their children during worship. While we have a regular Nursery Care person, Jenna, we need one other person each Sunday to volunteer with her. Of course, one person is not always able to care for multiple babies, and our Safe-Sanctuaries policy requires more than one person to supervise any group of children. There will be a sign-up sheet in the hallway. Thank you, in advance, for helping!

Donate Some Toys

Park Avenue Nursery School did leave us some toys, but not too many. They did not leave the indoor climber/slide, so we will be purchasing a new indoor play structure of some sort. If you are interested in donating any gently-used toys appropriate for babies or nursery-age children, please call Barb Lewis (370-0570).
